The claim: a fixed number of leads
A promise of 50 or 100 leads sounds concrete. The commercial meaning depends on what counts. A database contact, a positive email reply, a booked meeting and a sales-accepted opportunity can all be called a lead in different systems. They are not equivalent purchases.
Before comparing two proposals, ask each provider to complete this sentence: “We count one delivered unit when…” If the answers describe different events, comparing the price per lead without adjustment is misleading.
A documented example of why definitions matter
Instantly's published VIP Lead Guarantee Terms, reviewed on October 22, 2026, describe 100 leads for an initial term, not a renewing monthly guarantee. The window is 90 working days after specified setup conditions. Eligibility includes at least 120 provided mailboxes and a confirmed market of at least 50,000 prospects. Leads are unique prospects with replies classified as positive, not necessarily meetings or customers; different individuals at one company can count separately. The stated remedy is a bounded service extension, not a refund, and other subscriptions remain payable. Read the complete conditions before comparing this with a monthly qualified-opportunity offer. This example is an interpretation of the vendor's published wording, not an allegation that it failed to deliver. Buyers should read the full version governing their purchase, including the window, requirements and remedy. Terms can change; a website excerpt is not a substitute for the agreement.
The reality: delivery and business value need separate checks
A provider can meet an accurately described volume guarantee while the buyer still needs sales work. Someone asking for information has expressed something different from a person who has budget, authority, a suitable problem and an agreed next meeting.
Define fit before launch. Relevant criteria might include geography, business type, a supported use case and a reachable decision participant. Avoid silently adding requirements after delivery, but also avoid accepting an undefined label merely because the proposed number is large.
An original unit-economics example
Suppose a hypothetical campaign costs $4,000 and produces 100 unique positive replies. Of those, 25 book a meeting, 15 attend, six are accepted as suitable opportunities and one becomes a customer.
| Unit | Illustrative cost |
|---|---|
| Positive reply | $40 |
| Booked meeting | $160 |
| Attended meeting | About $267 |
| Sales-accepted opportunity | About $667 |
| Customer | $4,000 before additional acquisition costs |
These figures are a worked example, not typical performance. They show why a $40 result can be accurately reported and still leave the commercial evaluation unfinished. Add internal sales time, software and other acquisition costs before assessing profitability.
Build a rejection and reconciliation process
Agree how duplicate people, existing customers, out-of-area prospects, unsuitable companies, automated replies and test submissions are treated. Identify which system retains the source record and who can challenge a classification. Include the evidence and time allowed for a rejection, plus what a replacement or credit actually covers.
Reconcile a sample before scaling. A provider's count and a CRM count may differ because one is counting people and the other events or companies. Resolve that definition first. Renaming every unmatched row a tracking problem can conceal the real mismatch.
Questions worth asking
- What exact event qualifies one lead, and what does not count?
- Is the promise monthly, initial-term only or tied to another window?
- What must I supply, purchase or do to qualify for the guarantee?
- Who decides whether an entry meets the definition?
- What happens when the promise is missed: replacement, continued service, credit or refund?
- Which costs remain mine regardless of the outcome?
SharkBlade can help inspect supported capture records and source-specific evidence. It should not label every captured record a qualified sales opportunity. ZeroDark's standard is a transparent chain from the delivered unit to the business outcome, with the gaps left visible.
