MARKETING TRANSPARENCY / ZERODARK INSIGHTS

Indexed, Ranked or Advertised? Four Different Visibility Claims

Separate page creation, search indexing, organic ranking, advertisements and AI citations before evaluating an SEO performance promise.

The claim: “You are on Google now”

That statement might describe an indexed page, an advertisement, a business profile or a normal organic result. It might even refer to an AI answer that mentioned the brand. Those are different placements with different mechanisms, costs and reporting requirements.

A business owner does not need to master every search product to ask a precise question: which surface changed, for which audience, and what evidence shows it? Without that distinction, a provider can describe a modest technical milestone in language that sounds like a completed growth outcome.

The reality: publication is only the first stage

Publishing means a page is available at a URL. Indexing means a search system has included a representation of the page in its index. Ranking describes the position or ordering of a result for a particular query and context. An indexed page can receive little relevant exposure, and a position can change when the query, location or time changes.

Google's recrawling guidance says inclusion is not guaranteed by requesting a crawl. Therefore, a submission receipt is evidence of a request, not proof of indexation or useful rankings. A CMS confirmation is similarly evidence that content was published, not that a search platform selected it. Google: requesting recrawling. Google: AI features and websites.

Paid placement requires a separate explanation

An advertisement can create visibility while the campaign is running. That may be a legitimate and effective part of an acquisition strategy. The misleading step would be presenting bought exposure as proof that organic SEO has already succeeded.

Ask for spend, dates, campaign scope and the actual conversion definition. Keep advertising charges separate from service fees. A top-of-page screenshot without those details does not tell you whether the placement was paid, what it cost or whether anyone completed a meaningful action.

An AI citation is another observation, not a universal rank

An AI answer may name a brand, link to a page or use a source without naming its publisher in the narrative. Record these separately. The exact question, product, available search mode, date and location are part of the observation. A prompted answer that already includes your brand is not equivalent to unprompted discovery by an unfamiliar buyer.

Google states that its established SEO practices remain relevant to its AI features; it does not offer a special optimization requirement that guarantees inclusion. Other AI products have their own retrieval and presentation behavior. One answer cannot establish performance across all of them.

A hypothetical proposal audit

A provider sends three images: an indexed URL, a sponsored result and a brand mention in a chat answer. All three images could be authentic. None, alone, establishes that the business ranks organically for a relevant non-brand purchase query.

The correct response is not to discard the work. Relabel the deliverables. Put indexation under technical discovery, paid exposure under campaign performance and the chat result under a defined AI observation. Then request the additional evidence needed for the broader claim.

Use a visibility evidence table

Claim Minimum evidence to request
Published Working destination, publication date and rendered content
Indexed Relevant inspection or indexed-result evidence, with date
Ranked organically Exact query, market, position, URL and repeated observations
Advertised Labeled placement, campaign dates, spend and outcomes
Mentioned or cited by AI Saved answer, exact prompt, platform context and source URL where present

A strong report can include all five. It should not combine them into a single total called guaranteed rankings. ZeroDark uses the separation to help a business choose the next action: repair technical eligibility, improve relevant content, evaluate advertising efficiency or investigate AI-answer coverage.
