Attributed return visits do not establish incremental impact

Describe observed exposure and attributed actions without assuming every influenced person became a new customer. People already researching the business may return through several routes.

Retargeting reaches people who already interacted with a business. Their later response can be influenced by many earlier contacts. Attributed conversions can help operational review but do not by themselves show what would have happened without the ads.

A worked example

A hypothetical prospect visits from a referral, later sees a retargeting ad and submits an inquiry. The ad may receive credit under the selected rules. That record alone cannot establish that the ad created the entire opportunity or would scale at the same rate to new audiences.

How to apply it

  • Separate prospecting and retargeting populations in reporting.
  • Document attribution rules and frequency context where available.
  • Use a suitable controlled evaluation if the decision requires incremental-effect evidence.

What the result can establish

Avoid assigning all credited revenue exclusively to the final impression or click. Keep audience limitations and overlapping channels explicit. A high attributed return should trigger questions about causality and saturation, not an automatic unlimited-budget recommendation.
