AI Mentions vs AI Citations

Separate a brand being named from a source page being referenced as evidence.

Naming a brand and citing its page are different observations

Separate a brand being named from a source page being referenced as evidence. An answer can mention a business without linking to it, or cite an article without recommending its provider.

An AI answer can mention a business without linking to it, or cite a page without recommending that business. Neither proves accuracy, endorsement or a visit. Define the observation before assigning it commercial meaning.

A worked example

A hypothetical answer names a supplier but links to an unrelated directory. Another cites the supplier’s technical guide without naming it as a recommended vendor. Both deserve separate coding; combining them into one success count hides what actually happened.

How to apply it

  • Record the exact question, answer context, platform and observation date.
  • Code brand mention and relevant source citation separately.
  • Inspect the cited destination and whether it supports the associated statement.

What the result can establish

A citation is not automatically trustworthy simply because it is clickable. In its 2025 news-retrieval study, the Tow Center checked article, publisher and URL accuracy; that task is narrower than all AI search. Use it as a reason to verify references, not as a universal error forecast.
