Count relationships before celebrating links
Distinguish the number of linking websites from the total number of individual links. One website can supply many repeated links without adding the diversity implied by many independent sources.
A referring domain is a distinct linking website; backlinks are individual links. Many links from one source do not represent the same breadth of independent relationships as relevant links from multiple sources. Neither count establishes relevance, editorial independence or a guaranteed ranking benefit.
A worked example
A hypothetical directory generates 500 sitewide links from one domain. An industry association publishes one substantive reference to a useful technical resource. The link totals differ dramatically, but the first number alone cannot establish which relationship is more useful to prospective buyers.
How to apply it
- Separate domain counts from individual link counts and record the source provider.
- Inspect source relevance, destination, placement and whether the link is useful to a reader.
- Review new and lost relationships without treating every automated count change as a business event.
What the result can establish
Use referral quality and relevant discovery alongside supported search evidence. Do not buy links to manufacture a count or describe every backlink as an endorsement. Provider indexes can differ, so comparisons need a consistent source and collection scope.
