Zero-Click Search: What Can You Measure?

Distinguish observed website activity from exposure that never produces a measurable visit.

A missing click does not reveal what the searcher did

Distinguish observed website activity from exposure that never produces a measurable visit. A change in click behavior does not reveal every reason a searcher stayed on the results page.

A search result can answer a question without producing a site visit, but an impression without a click does not prove that happened. Search layout, relevance and position also affect behavior. Separate observed metrics from explanations that cannot be directly measured.

A worked example

A hypothetical guide gains impressions and loses clicks. It is tempting to assign the entire difference to AI answers. Without controlled evidence, the report should instead inspect query mix, position and search appearances and identify the remaining uncertainty.

How to apply it

  • Record the observable search and site measures with their definitions.
  • Use dated result observations to investigate particular questions.
  • Track relevant inquiries and broader discovery without claiming to identify every non-click outcome.

What the result can establish

AI mentions and citations require their own defined observation method. Google’s AI search documentation explains eligibility and reporting context; it does not turn ordinary impression totals into a precise count of answers that replaced visits. Avoid invented zero-click attribution.
