Search Intent: Guide, Service Page or Comparison?

Match the page format to the decision the searcher is trying to make.

Choose the format that completes the searcher’s task

Match the page format to the decision the searcher is trying to make. A definition question needs a clear explanation while a service query needs scope, evidence and a next step.

Informational and commercial language can overlap. Inspect the full question: does the reader need an explanation, a vendor capable of delivery or a comparison of alternatives? The appropriate format should answer that task with enough specificity to support the next decision.

A worked example

A hypothetical search for dashboard examples deserves inspectable examples with explanations. A query for a reporting partner needs delivery scope and fit. A comparison query needs clear criteria and limitations rather than a guide that quietly changes into a sales pitch.

How to apply it

  • Write a one-sentence statement of the reader’s unresolved decision.
  • Review current search results as contextual evidence, not a permanent format rule.
  • Build the answer first and connect it to the relevant commercial page when appropriate.

What the result can establish

Evaluate page/query fit and useful next steps. A long guide is not inherently a better service page, and a high-volume phrase is not automatically the best target. Revisit the choice when actual queries show a different need.
