Merge answers when the separate URLs no longer serve separate needs

Keep the strongest answer when several articles cover the same question and preserve useful material during consolidation. Similar posts can divide maintenance effort and leave readers unsure which version is current.

Consolidation should improve the destination, not merely reduce the number of posts. Identify the strongest useful explanation, preserve distinct evidence and choose a relevant retained URL. Similar keywords alone are not enough to justify a merge.

A worked example

A hypothetical pair of guides repeats the same KPI checklist, but one includes an important worked calculation. The retained guide should preserve and improve that calculation. Redirecting the weaker URL without moving its useful material would discard part of the reason readers visited it.

How to apply it

  • Compare intent, evidence, existing references and the maintenance burden.
  • Create one coherent answer rather than stitching repeated introductions together.
  • Update relevant internal links and implement an appropriate redirect where justified.

What the result can establish

Check the destination, redirects and discovery paths after the change. Monitor query/page behavior over time without promising that consolidation always increases rankings. Keep a decision record so future writers do not recreate the retired overlap.
