Being cited and receiving a visit are separate events
Treat referral visits and observed answer presence as separate measurements. A company can be mentioned without receiving a measurable website visit, and referral labels can be incomplete.
AI visibility observations describe answer appearances under a defined protocol. Website analytics describes measured arrivals where attribution is available. A cited page may receive no observed visit, and an AI-influenced visit may arrive without a reliable referrer.
A worked example
A hypothetical report records ten relevant citations but two identified referral sessions. That is not an 80% tracking-loss calculation: the observations use different populations. Some citations may receive no click at all.
How to apply it
- Track answer mentions and citations separately from site referrals.
- Preserve the analytics source definition and unknown attribution.
- Review actual inquiry evidence without inferring every influence from the last visit.
What the result can establish
Pew’s 2025 study used a dated U.S. browsing sample and separately collected result pages. It observed fewer traditional-result clicks with AI summaries; it does not establish a universal current click rate or ZeroDark-specific loss. Use research as context, not a forecast.
