Why Social Clicks Do Not Equal Website Sessions

Check what the platform calls a click before comparing it with visits measured on your website.

A platform action and a measured arrival use different rules

Check what the platform calls a click before comparing it with visits measured on your website. Some clicks interact with the social interface rather than opening the intended page.

A social click may open a link, expand content or follow another action depending on the selected metric. Website sessions depend on successful arrival and collection. Read the actual field definition before comparing totals.

A worked example

A hypothetical report compares all post clicks with site sessions and finds a large gap. Some clicks may not have been outbound website clicks at all. Even a true outbound count can differ from sessions because of redirects, repeated clicks and collection conditions.

How to apply it

  • Identify whether the platform field specifically measures outbound destination clicks.
  • Test tagged links and the final page under realistic app and browser conditions.
  • Compare trends without forcing incompatible totals into equality.

What the result can establish

Use accepted intake records to establish inquiries. Do not label the unexplained difference as known lost traffic or claim a precise tracking-loss percentage without supporting evidence.
